There are some species of fish that can tolerate almost any kind of pollutant, not many, but they exist. I would not use them as an indicator of water quality unless you knew they were of a species that required very pristine water conditions.

Once in a while you can find a variety of seaweeds at health food stores, or places like Earth Fare, Whole Foods etc. and sometimes they are actually cheaper than the pet stores sea weeds.
The Julian Sprung line of sea weeds in pets stores, the "two Little Fishies" brand are excellent quality and while a bit spendy, as Emma says, you don't use tons and a little goes a long way.

Very true and I have used them for a few years. They have 3 varieties and our hermies have taken to them all. I do grind a couple sheets and put these in an air tight jar and make sure to use a twisty tie and get all the air out of the bag that I do not use. They do stay fresh this way.
