maybe once or twice a month I put a little shredded cheddar out for them and they go at that cheese like you would not believe!!

Sadly, this myth has been resurrected again in certain circles. Dairy is beneficial because of the calcium and protein (casein). It is unlikely that hermit crabs would ever encounter milk and cheese in their natural, unpolluted environment. However, they are scavengers and make use of things no other creature could touch. In fact, most of what you're feeding them in captivity is NOT something they'd find in their native environment.
