no the shell is definitely growing. when I change the water I rinse it out and squeeze it under very hot water.

If the sponge was dry when you got it I would think any kind of snail in the shell would of died. It takes a living snail in the shell for the shell to grow. It may be working out of the sponge with crab help and that may make it look like the shell is growing. Unless the snail came from another source and found its way to your water dish and sponge? Sponge is fine for the crabs to eat and they will eat bits of shell that is in the sponge too. Its normal for animals to grow in and live in sponges in the wild. Keep us posted and let us know what happens next!

No, the shell definitely grew larger over time (I have since thrown the sponge out) but I could see a little bit of sponge in the opening of the shell, so I don't know what to think.
