Live sand has microbes and tiny crustaceans in it that act as a living filter for saltwater aquariums. They help to filter out some of the 'stuff' in the water - uneaten food, dead scales/small pieces of skin that naturally fall off, excrement, and even dead animals. All sand in an aquarium will eventually become "live" (microorganisms will eventually grow in it and perform the same functions) but it takes longer.

Hey Ragingnome, it seems I've been a little confused myself about the "Live" sands.
I do know that the sugar grain aragonite always comes wet, but I had assumed it was a "Live" sand. Apparently it isn't, and due to the microbes and such, "Live" sand isn't really a great choice for hermit crab tanks.
I am thinking that possibly, if you HAD to buy it, you could still bake it and kill off whatever makes it "Live"? (That sounds so mean!)
I don't know about that, what do you say Marie? Anyone?

If one had no choice but to buy the live sand, yes giving it a good rinse and then baking it dry will kill all the 'live' out of it. But here is a direct link to CaribSea that does show the CaribSea that is not live sand: (scroll down and read the info for "Live Bacteria")

http://www.caribsea.com/pages/products/ ... onite.html

Then here: (scroll down and see it does have "Live Bacteria" and IS live sand)

That's a handy chart, but checks "no" under "safe for burrowers" on the sugar size grain. Does that simply apply to fish and not to herms?
