Food trial: Tamarack

Post by Jedi_Sena »

Last summer I collected some tamarask/tamarack/tamarix (aka "salt cedar") and dried some. I tried to feed it as a trial food, but each time I'd put it in the tank, someone would burry the dish w/ sand so I could not tell whether it had been tried or not. Last night I put a small dish of it in the tank and this morning it is rather disturbed indicating that someone spent a lot of time in that dish. Well, it will take a couple weeks to make sure that it is safe for them or not. But at least I finally have good evidence that they ate some of it. I think I will try to take it out for a day and put it back in. Sometimes the second feeding will draw the crabs out of hiding if it is something they liked before. I'd like to see some crab actually scooping the food up into his mouth before I will feel confident to call it safe or unsafe.

I'll let you all know my findings.

Here is a page where you can view several photos:

I have noticed that if my hermies don't like something than they will cover it up with sand.

I decided to try apples. at the time I had just apples in the dish. i woke up it was covered with sand. I changed it, put a mixe of collards, squash, and carrots. It was 1/2 gone the following morning. I put some apples back in that night, the dish was buried. idk...maybe it was a fluke. everything else they eat, apples are the only thing i have had a problem with.

huh. that's weird. mine have been surprisingly hungry these past few weeks. i don't know what the deal is. we woke up this morning and found zeus bebe wendy ike and craig all huddled around the food dish. wendy's the only one who got there first i guess bc she was sitting in it. craig is "next in line" i guess bc he's waiting beside the dish. i dont' know what the deal is.
