what exactly do they eat in the wild, and also, i heard that they can have clams or muscles in their tank that they pry open and eat, is this true?

They are known as scavengers, and will eat whatever they can get their claws on from fallen fruit to dead seagulls. Sounds gruesome, but you never know when your next meal will come in the wild.

Leaves are one of the main food sources in their natural habitat and I have always had some form of leaf or bark in their crabitat at all times along w/ whatever human-grade foods I was feeding. There is a great new product for sale on eBay that my crabs really like that is stuffed w/ leaves that you won't find in your fridge:

Someone once told me that they eat dead wild donkeys in their native environment--or at least some species do. I suppose anything dead is hermit crab paradise.
