burning bush
Oh, goodness! I noticed that the burning bush in our driveway was starting to turn red--the way it does in the fall. Well, I've been thinking a lot of foods that improve color since one of my crabs is kinda paling. So, the streak of red caught my eye and I snapped off a few leaves on my way out and tossed them into the crabitat when I got to work. Well, this morning one leaf was 90% eaten. Also, one of the seed pods had been partially eaten. So far everyone seems fine, so I hope I've stumbled onto a new safe food, but I'm a little nervous since they ate so much of it. I'm pretty brave offering untried foods since I know they avoid harmful things pretty well by instinct, but I was pretty sure they would avoid the seed pod at least.

that's really interesting. i wonder how many other plants that are grown can be eaten by hermies. i know that we have to be careful with pesticides.

Julia_crab is going to do some research on the plant's toxicity rating. Let you know the findings.

Here's my photos:

Here is what went into the crabitat:

(you can see that the bottom leaf has been eaten on and the berry has part of the sheild devoured; later they mangled the berry too)

it's exciting about finding new foods that hermies love! they're not picky really, but sometimes they are. i know mine are. the only meat that they will touch is the dried blood worms.
