Hi, we are re-setting up the enclosure which had eco earth. I understand the ratio is 5:1 part. Has any one used Quikrete play sand? I'm concerned with the impurities in any play sand which I've read. I understand it is recommended to use eco earth blocks. Has anyone used eco earth loose substrate mixed in the play sand? Also, for setting up a 40 gallon tank, how would that be done? How many bags of the play sand to how much eco earth? If using loose eco earth- how much? Or does it need to be blocks?
If so , how many?
And do people prepare the block with boiling water? Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Re: Subrate
The substrate needs to be at least twice the depth of your largest hermit crab’s size, but generally the deeper the better. You don’t need to boil the coconut fibre; I just loosen it with salt water.

Re: Subrate
Hi, thanks for responding, so for a 40 gallon tank- what are the proportions? Is it 5 or 6 bags of sand (50 gallons a bag) to 2 bags of eco Earth? I think I read somewhere it's 2 blocks of eco Earth.
I don't know the equivalent to 2 or 3 blocks of eco Earth to loose eco Earth. Does it come out better consistency with eco blocks? If anyone can help.

I’m not sure about the proportions, but the coconut fibre will expand once wet and loosened. You don’t have to be exact.
