Polishing Shells?

Post by Sophia The Tortoise »

Hi, I have just joined the forum recently. I have several hermit crabs and I really enjoy having them.
I have a question with regard to polished shells. I have some extra large magpie shells and would like to know how to polish them myself and what to use to do so? Thanks very much,
Connie

Polish? I've never tried polishing shells, but you could try dumping the empty shells in hot water and giving them a good scrub to dry.

I agree, I don't know how to polish a shell. I boil all of my shells when I buy them, just in case, but as long as they don't have paint on them, they should be ok.

Scrub them with a stiff bristled brush (stiff toothbrush will work for smaller shells). Allow them to dry. Then use a nail buffer to bring out the shine.

Make sure you use dechlorinated water, no soaps or any cleaning products.

If you wanted to make a turbo shell have that one polished line around the outside i'm pretty sure you could use a dremel to get down to the shiny layer.

Try using sandpaper to polish them down. Or try using vinigar and salt. I also use coconut oil
