additives to worry about ? (preservative220)

Post by rawbie »

ive spent a lot of time at the super-market looking through the mixed nuts and dried fruit section. i look through the ingredients and often come across "preservative 220" such as in dried apricots.
i havent bought any products with anything other than natural products in the ingredients list, yet. are preservatives such as 220 harmful to crabs ? also, are there any other acids or additives crabbers should steer well clear of ? dog food and cat food have a long list of unnatural ingredients id love to know which ones are a big no no for hermies.
thanks for all replies in advance.

also, garlic is smelly. figured it would lure them to the bowl, anything bad about it?

Preservative 220 is Sulphur dioxide, derived from coal tar. Bad enough for humans and the environment (acid rain's main ingredient), probably not what you want for you hermies.

Garlic is a no for hermit crabs as it has insecticidal qualities and can irritate their soft abdomens. When in doubt, the Epicurean Hermit has a good starting place for safe vs. unsafe foods for crabs.
