Ok I am sure his has been asked before and I am just not able to find it. My big one I was excited about burying under has moved to the front of the tank where I can see into his hole. He is not in a shell. Do they come out of their shells under the sand when they molt? I do not see his shell any where near his hole it is only big enough for him and I mean he was in a large shell.

Well he had no shed his exo yet just his shell. So I started to move some sand from off the top of him and he came up on his own. I had a bowl of decholrinized water and I placed him in it and had a big shell ready for him. I placed him and the shell on a towel and he went right in. He is now in new shell in ISO. Keeping claws crossed he will bury back down and stay in his shell.

yeah, i believe they're supposed to go under with their shells, create that "cave" and then come out of their shells, molt, wait for it to harden, get back in their shells and then resurface.
that's good that he's in a new shell! i'll keep them crossed for ya!

the crabs are not supposed to came out of their shells when molting. the shells are what protect them. the crabs should always be in their shells unless they are swapping shells. i hope all goes well! good luck! (keep us posted)

really? i thought that's why they bury themselves, bc they come out of their shells and molt and they're so vulnerable....

Quick update on Houdini. He is still in his new shell but he has not buried back down. He has lost his big pincher. He is in ISO. I will keep you updated.

Well I think he was trying to molt. 3 of his 4 leags had the black tips on them. The 4th one seem to be trying to grow back what was gone and his big pincher was broke. He had lost his little one before. He did not make it though.

aw, i'm so sorry iluvhermies. an unsuccessful molt is horrible, but at least you know what happened to him, it's not a mystery. i brought shelley home and she immediately went under, but did not make it. i didn't get to watch her though. when i had to dig her up all of her feet had black tips on the end, so i have no idea what happened. my prayers are with you.

Thank you very much for the prayers. I also found one of my oriental firebelied toads dead too. I have lost both of them in the last week. Their tank is clean and everything was right. I am not sure if i got some bad crickets or what. I have had the one for several years now and the female we had for several months.
