Can you put the heat lamp on the outside side of the tank where it could warm some of the substrate for them? Lights/heat lamps can also warm substrate. Use your inner wrist (where one tests a baby bottle) if you do not have a probe thermometer. Make sure there is a cool and a warmer side to the substrate.

Just to add to what Marie said, fingertips are not a reliable way of measuring temperature.

Second storey help

Post by Purple pinchers »

Well i am finaly putting in a sercond level to the crab tank :)

I have some extra fish tank silicone left over so i was going to selicone some plexiglass for an extra level. The plexiglass is in storage in another building and mice seem to get in there alot. So i need to disinfect the plexi glass. Should i scrub it with soap then rinse with water then let it soak in salt water for awile? Not sure what would be a good way to clean it so any thoughts about disinfecting it, would be help full. Then because it takes a couple of days for the silicone to dry i wont be able to have the crabs in there. So i have a plastic tub with lid (Its about 12inches by like 8 iches wide and 5-6 inches tall) Would that be able to hold 3 medium size crabs for about 2 days?

Well i have decided not to silicone the plexi glass on. So now i am looking into useing supports to hold up the plexi glass. I was going to use some PVC pipe and use silicone to glue it on. But the question is is PVC pipe safe, I have read that it gives of toxic smells but then i also see alot of people use PVC in there crabitat :S . And if PVC is bad what would be a better option?

PVC pipe is not safe to use in the tank.

Remember, just because many use a product does NOT make it safe.
