feeding

Post by kansas »

Hi. I am wondering how much and how often you others feed your crabs. I have purchased food from another hermit crab website and they get a very diverse diet of crab healthy food but dont seem to eat alot. I normally put something different out every night. I gave carrot powder and red wheat puffs last night. They dont seem to eat a whole lot and I am wondering if I put out too much or too often. I have 3 crabbies but one is moulting. Thanks!

Keep track on how much food is left over each time and feed them less.

I usually give them too much (they're so spoiled lol :P ) but I agree with Wai. I do know that it depends on the crabs too. Like for instance i've had them eat everything one night and then the next not touch their food at all, so it depends if they're hungry or not. ^_^

It also depends on what you feed them. If you happen to give them something they love, they will probably devour it all by 48 hours. Mine absolutely love popcorn puffs and the food dish is always cleared of them by 48 hours.

And normally when a hermie is in premolt they will gorge food too, as well as usually here the ocean water pond begins to become lower as the days go by.

I'm of a mind that when they don't seem to be eating much at all, I feed them much smaller portions. I like to give them 4 or 5 different foods each time I feed them (if it's dry or food that doesn't mold quickly, it may stay 48 hrs). If they seem to be eating a lot, I will give larger portions and change it sooner, just in case they are needing something else nutritionally.
A hermit crab won't eat the same thing you gave him for 14 hrs for up to two weeks, that's why they need a constant variety.
I try to feed a protein, a calcium source, and some fruits and veggies as well as a seaweed each day. I also make sure to give them organic earthworm castings at least once a week.
I also keep in mind that I can give the same food twice in a few days, just in case some of the crabs missed out when it was in before. The portions are so very small to begin with, it doesn't really matter to give them some food they aren't eating. It's not like I"ll run out any time soon! :)
