When you do start them out after bringing them home from a bad environment, the temp should be at minimum 72*F, and there should be a warmer end they can move to if they choose as well, and you can increase the temp a little more quickly than the humidity without causing harm. Consider how temperatures can fluctuate between night and day in the wild.

It also occurred to me when looking at the pics, if the crabs are without water too long, and cannot refill their shell water, it may be that their abdomen has dried out some as well. I wonder if anyone knows of any research on this, or experience with the drying of the abdomen for whatever reason?

I have to head off, time to leave work, but the thought just came and now I'm really wondering...
Definitely a thought. I will be purchasing another 2.5 gal aquarium soon for an ISO tank I think, and getting a small UTH to put under it. Will be using that for all future rescues.

Does the store you got your crab at have any type of guarentee? I know Petsmart has a 14 day one. That way you could "exchange" your poor little one for somebody else that you could possibly save. Why not give somebody else a chance at a loving home? ;)

I'm sure they do, but I went in the store a day ago and the other two that were alive when I got him were dead. They haven't gotten a new shipment in...I won't be purchasing from them again. I will however see if I cant get them to improve their conditions. I'll probably rescue from the store I got banjo and blu from, or possibly petsmart.

Where you bought him from, is it a chain pet store or a mom and pop type store?
If it is a chain store one can try to contact corporate. I would certainly try to talk to the manager/owner of the store. If it is a mom and pop store and they do not attempt to care for the hermies there is also a place one can contact about the care the hermies are not receiving too.

Please do get involved. Who knows how many hundreds of others will have to endure what these hermies went through if not. I got involved with the PSP here in my area, and they do not sell hermies any longer and haven't for a couple of years!

http://www.petsuppliesplus.com/contactus.htm

As with most cooperate offices though, one should attempt to talk to the manager in charge (get name, date and time).
Conditions during their visit, and date and time with store number. (store number can be found towards the top of the receipt)

I will definitely try to get involved. I feel so bad for those hermies. :(

Haha I don't care! If they're not going to take proper care of them (at least bare minimums) they shouldn't be keeping them in the store!
