Post by Zombie(: »

today i bought:
"Hermit Crab Salt Water Conditioner"
(it reads:)
*adds calcium and natural sea salt to a second water dish in your crab's enclosure (extremely important for long term crab health)
*removes chlorine, chloramines and ammonia
*allows for ease in molting
*aids in the hardening of your crab's exoskeleton after molting

(has tips on the back about temperature and blah blah blah)

INGREDIENTS:
water, natural sea salt, ClorAm-X, buffers, synthetic organic polymers, and yellow #5
:S NOT SURE WHY THEY DYED IT YELLOW XD

Please take this back to the store. It is not a good salt for your hermies.
Please read "Water" in the Crab Care section:

Apparently you did not read all the info in the crab care section regarding water, especially the ocean/sea salt. Please do read it....

You should of also seen that a salinity level needs to range from 1.021-1.024. When tested it did not register... please do read the crab care section. Again, no the ZooMed is not a good product, period.

Instant Ocean Marine Sea Salt

Post by babesbarn »

Things can be very confusing with all the products they have that have pictures of hermit crabs on it or say they are a product but not really the product you are really needing. I found that out the hard way with my Old Crusty who died because he was drinking soaking salt. I am certain that was why. But Once I came back to the forum here and really paid attention to the links provided I found that the Marine Sea Salt (Ocean) was what they really needed. I do not ask anyone in a pet store for anything anymore. I come here. I wonder how long the sea salt actually lasts when I make a gallon as it directs. My two little hermies don't use that much and wonder if a gallon is too much. I make it with the distilled water. They really seem to "go for it" along with the distilled. Any ideas on storage time? thanks (?)

One can cut it back to a 1/2 U.S. gallon at a time. There are times ocean/sea mix once mixed can turn/sour. To the best of my knowledge there has not actually been a time limit as to how long this takes... it could vary. For now since you already mixed it just keep a nose on it. Shake before each use and sniff. Any odor noted other than when you first mixed it, pitch it.
