You have to be able to answer a few questions: Is it a clean beach?
Is there any danger of toxins from the water or the sand?

If you are positive that the beach is pristine, and the water nearby has not had any risk of pollution (this includes motor boats that spill oil and gasoline into the water), then possibly it will be okay.

Just thought I'd mention that dark green leaves are good color enhancers. I like burning bush for this purpose.

I agree that Salmon is worth adding for a lot of reasons, one of the most important being the fatty acid profile, but while they contain astaxanthin, it is so low as to be, well, not a player in this context. If you are looking for astaxanthin, there are many sources that are orders of magnitude better.

It's not just about boats. It also has a lot to do with whether there are any rivers that might feed chemicals or toxins into the ocean nearby, or if there are a lot of people who spend time at the beach. There will be sunblock and spilled beverages of all kinds in the sand, washed into the ocean nearby, and could affect seaweed found in the area. You really just have to judge carefully.

The point we're trying to make here is if people use that beach at any time in the year, their sunblock and anything they drop will get into the sand and the water. Even if there haven't been people there for a few weeks, the sunblock that was in the water has been ingested by the fish, absorbed by the seaweed, settled on the sand, etc.

Wild hermies are exposed to sunblocks and whatever chemicals may be in your water, yes, but they have a choice about it. If they are around something that they don't like or that might harm them, they can leave. They have no such ability in our tanks. Another thing to consider is whether or not hermit crabs live on your beach and eat the type of seaweed there. Do you know what kind of seaweed it is? It may not be a kind crabs like, or that they would ever eat in the wild. That's why most of us use pet store seaweeds. You can buy a huge sheet of it there, and it's going to be safe and not expose your hermies to anything that would kill them. It isn't expensive, and it will last a long time. In the same way, if you can find spirulina powder at, say, a health food store, you'll be able to use that jar for years with the crabs because they don't need much. A tiny bit is plenty for them, and it takes a long time for those jars/bottles to be finished.
