Gulf Oil And the Purple Pincher
If your not living under a rock Im sure by now you all have heard of the Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill. THis is a huge tragedy to millions of animals as well as families that live there. They are keeping pretty hush hush about it but I came across some photos and a few of them being of the Purple pinchers that are not doing well. Some are even saying that they are covering up the oil soaked beaches with sand. So my thoughts are that these little guys as well as many other animals are being tragically lost forever. So treasure and take good care of the ones you have. We won't know for years how bad this disaster has affected our eco system. I have a large 48 gallon crabitat. But I am think of converting my 55 gallon in my living room to another crabitat as well. It looks like this may be it for awhile for the crabbies.

Re: Gulf Oil And the Purple Pincher
I've seen some pictures of oil-covered crabs online, but they're usually one in between five or ten pictures of birds and other larger animals. I realize that bigger animals have problems too, but so do small animals like crabs. However, larger animals are more easily saved; the harsh chemicals to remove oil from animals would kill crabs, so while I'm angry that they just cover crabs up with sand, I also kind of understand why they would try to focus their energy where they can actually make a difference.

Under normal temperature and pressure, oil and water do not readily mix, so washing them with water won't help much. That's why oil spills are so problematic.

Re: Gulf Oil And the Purple Pincher
Sadly the oil that is in the Gulf from the leak cannot be washed off with just water. They have shown on my local news channel where they were using mild dish soap (Dawn) in attempt to get as much oil off of the wild life as possible. Unfortunately this does not work for hermies or fish, it is harmful/lethal to them.
