Here's some pics I got of the lil guys while they were exploring.
Skip just cruising around. You can sort of see his gel limbs! http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae24 ... G_0023.jpg and http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae24 ... G_0025.jpg
one of the crabs I'm crabsitting: http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae24 ... G_0062.jpg
and http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae24 ... G_0059.jpg
And Banjo's favorite hangout spot as of late: http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae24 ... G_0058.jpg
when do you guys think I should move the lil guys in with the big guys? Or should I leave them the the 5.5gal and let the big guys have the 10 to themselves?

Re: Pics of some of the hermies
Give them a minimum of two weeks in iso before you move them all in together. They should all be fine. Make sure the parameters of both tanks are the same before you move them so you aren't shocking them into having to adjust to an abrupt temp or humidity change.
when the time comes to move them all in together, give the new guys all a dip in the fresh water pond before you change it out, to help get the "smell" of the main tank on them so they are less likely to have confrontations with the other crabs. Expect a lot of antennae waving and probably some large claw pushing matches, but don't interfere unless you see that big claw come up and open threateningly. They do need to establish their pecking order.

Re: Pics of some of the hermies
Thanks! Yea the parameters are the same in both tanks. I'll probably wait on moving them until I get that thermostat. That way they all will adjust together.
How about the sand depth? Will it be ok for the lil guys to start burying? There's about an inch and a half of sand in the 10 gal which is much deeper than the lil guys are high lol.

Re: Pics of some of the hermies
An inch and a half isn't really that much actually, if you choose to allow your molters to stay in the main tank. I feel much safer with a very deep sand, so there is less chance of a molter accidentally being dug up, or another crab "smelling" them more easily because of the shallowness at which they are buried. My sand is about 4" deep at one end, and when I remodel, I plan to make it at least 6", as I have a large hermie that is close to jumbo size.
That's just my preference, but it makes me feel safer about the molters.
As long as it is at least twice as deep as your largest crab, it should be okay.

I will deepen it in the long run for sure. Just wanted all my new guys to get adjusted to the humidity and temp before I added anymore sand I think everyone is doing well so far:)

Re: Pics of some of the hermies
Skip has been in the tank for almost 4 weeks now...the new lil ones I'm crabsitting and keeping with him have been in there for a week tomorrow. Blu and Banjo have been in their tank for about 2 weeks now...Should I wait until all have been in the tanks for about 3-4 weeks before adding sand and switching them over? (provided I get my thermostat first!)

Re: Pics of some of the hermies
Jadedox,
there are many good reasons to do iso. I know we had at least one email where a crabber introduced a crab into their crabitat, and within a week all 4 of her crabs were dead, and the new one was dying.
There's no telling what caused it. The person reported somewhat normal tank parameters, certainly nothing alarming enough to cause deaths within a few days of each other.
It also gives the new hermies a chance to adjust to the sounds/activity rhythms in their new home, and to get used to having all their needs met so they don't have to compete for food or habitat. They will be more stressed as well as your old hermies being more stressed if you put them in the tank together right away before the newbies have had a chance to chill for a while.
You also never know if they are carrying mites (completely normal for animals harvested from the wild) as well as disease.
But more important than all these, you should note the conditions the hermies came from. Was it a dry, cool pet store? You will want to adjust your hermies slowly to having the correct humidity and temp. PPS can cause death even a month or two after you bring them home.
An abrupt change from a very dry environment to a very moist one can drown a hermie (I had it happen) because they are not used to the humidity in the air.
A good article that may convince you: http://crabstreetjournal.com/xoops/modu ... ting+death
Unfortunately the links at the bottom are broken (the articles are) due to some glitches when CSJ was being moved over to a new system. But the PPS article is intact, and is still pretty up-to-date.

Re: Pics of some of the hermies
How are they acting? Are they eating well, drinking well and had their feel of trying on shells? If so, and if it were me I would bath them altogether, put them in neutral territory for their first introduction to each other. If not aggressive behavior (as in no pincher pinching), shoving and antenna fights are normal on first introductions then off to the main tank they would go with all the bells and whistles so to speak..Should I wait until all have been in the tanks for about 3-4 weeks before adding sand and switching them over?
