Hermit crabs need to have plenty of room to spread themselves apart when they bury themselves to moult safely. Crowding hermit crabs is just asking for cannibalism.

I used to use and, as long as its not calium sand. Now i use 100percent coconut fiber, becuase i think its better. But if you want to use the sand (as long as its not calci-sand) its your call! ;)

I know taking em out is a bit risky, but I always keep an eye on them and the temp of the tank. It is still winter so it doesn't heat up too much. When it gets warmer I won't be taking them out for that reason. They enjoy being in the light because my room is quite cold and dark. They do have a heat mat under 1/3 of the tank. It heats the tat to the minimum allowed temp for crabs. Mabe thats why they r still buried. I am moving house soon so it should be alot more light for them

You should also keep an eye on the humidity levels. The sun can sharply decrease humidity levels.
