My first moulter finally came up and is healthy and active. My kids and I are very excited!!!

How long did it take for your moulter to come up? My first is underground for 2 weeks and it seems like forever! Did you do anything to the sand, etc. while he was under?

It took about a month. It depends on the size of the crab they can stay under for up to 3 months or so I have read. I misted the sand above where the crab was. I have 17 crabs and 8 of them are buried.

I'm part of another hermie forum and I asked the same question about how often they molt. This is the response I received. Hope it helps!

How often
A micro will molt every 2 to 4 weeks
Small Hermie- 4 to 8 weeks
Medium hermie- 2 months to 6 months
Large hermie-6 months to 12 months
Jumbo hermies - 12 months to 18 months

Molt times
a small hermie --- 4 to 6 weeks
Medium hermie--- 5 to 8 weeks.
Large hermie ----- 2 to 3 months
Jumbo hermie ---- 3 to 4 months.

They eat the old exo first, then they stay under usually long enough for new one to harden ,
Then they come up and choose a shell if they want to.

Thank you everyone for all your information! I am still waiting (only 2 weeks but it feels forever!) for my hermie to come up from what I guess is his first molt. I have read a ton on the internet but my best information has come from these forums - I am very new to forums and hermies and can't thank you enough for all your help - you guys are the best!
