There has been some research done, but so far nobody has been able to breed hermit crabs past the Zoea stage and all died by day 10 after hatching.

But if that's the case, then how are hermit crabs born? They have to breed somehow! :S

Every hermit crab in a pet store was hatched in the wild and caught to be shipped to pet stores around the country. That is the only way that crabs breed - they have been observed to travel to specific spots in the wild to breed, so that may have something to do with it. Regardless, every crab people buy is another crab caught from the wild that will never get to breed again.

Emma is correct that all hermies we have were taken from their homes in the wild. For how hermies are born, please read LifeCycle of a hermit crab. Only a couple crustacean scientists/biologist have been able to raise hermies from the zoea stage to the final metamorphoses stage to where they move onto land for the last stage, to burrow. When they come up, then they take on a shell for the first time to protect their soft little bottoms. But even with all the scientists/biologist have on hand they have only been able to have a few hermies survive out of thousands of zoea.

That's sad. It makes us thankful for the live hermit crabs that we have, considering their hatching is such a rare thing. :(

man i guess its kind of bad, us buying hermit crabs that could of bred in the wild, and raised the population. but then when you think about it the other way, the crabs we have could of been sold to irresponsible owners, and died from pps (not saying that all crabs that die from pps have bad owners, just the type of owners that dont do any reserch or anything, thats what im talking about) , or died before they were even bourght!

When I bought my two Equadorians Gobo and Wembley and after I watched them trying desperately to get out of the tank, all I could think of was how they were trying to get back to their beach, back to the open air, back home where they were safe and free, and I felt awful. I decided then and there that I would never buy another hermit crab. Once I knew I had a good setup where they would survive well, I would adopt, but I would not support the pet stores to buy more crabs that would be ripped from their homes. Broke my heart.
