"Frozen" Ecudorian?!

Post by Salt and Pepper »

I purchased a new E yesterday from a pet store with THE WORST conditions. (Small Critter Cage, Colored Pointy Gravel, Tap Water, no heating, no food, tank was buried under boxes on shelf). He was walking yesterday and this morning, but a bit slowly. Now he's "frozen". He's not moving at all, I touched his limbs and put a drop of water on him and he's still not moving. I placed him down and his shell and him just rolled. He's now in his take home carrier isolated and we're getting a new one. We think he's dead. Has anyone heard of this though?!

That's what one of my PPS losses, a PP, was like. I found him the next morning, just staring blankly out of the tank.

You'll smell if he's dead - give the tank a smell. It'll smell like dead fish if he is.

Well, I didn't really "smell" it. It was definately dead. I just picked it up to check on it, and it was frozen, but out of his shell (not all the way though). We isolated him in a Take-Home carrier and he just rolled on is back. We checked on him later in the carrier and he was still frozen and flipped on his back. We brought him back and got a refund, and got to choose a new crab. There is also a no-return policy on animals, but we the guy made an 'exception' probably because we told him we were going to buy a guinea pig and guinea pig supplies over there. "He's just been frozen like that." I said. "Is it.. dead?" The guy said. "I don't know, I think so." *Guy touches crab* *Crab doesn't move at all* "Yeah, it's dead. I'll take care of that." So, I got a new crab which I named "Coke" for it's brown color. He seems a bit afraid of the Eco Earth. He was out of his shell and when I put him in the tank, he quickly retracted back into his shell (4 times). I don't think I'll buy any more hermit crabs there again.

Yeah, PPS is a bummer - I hate losing crabs to it. I'm glad you got a new crab from the store to replace it - one of my two PPS deaths happened too late for the 'replacement policy' at the store I got it from. I think it happened like a day after the policy ran out.

I'm glad you got another crab; please remember to leave him alone as much as possible to destress if the store was as bad as you say. He'll get used to the EE in time, but please don't handle him for two weeks to a month. Just give him all the food and water he needs and he should do just fine. :)
