changing water

Post by krazykrablady »

I've been changing both the freshwater and salt water daily, is this too often? also, I put a small natural sponge in both dishes (I'm not taking any chances of drowning crabs) they're a brown color, and I've been rinsing them daily... I'm not quite sure how to describe, but the freshwater sponge doesn't look the same color as it has... is this mold possibly? I've read that you can microwave the sponges for a few seconds to get rid of mold, is this true? I've got it out of the dish to dry out in case that is true..

Hi. As far as changing the water, you are doing just fine. The more often you change it the better. What you've heard about the microvawe trick is absolutely true. Just rinse the sponge real good, make sure it's competely dry (otherwise it will shrink down to this tiny little shriveled thing), now go ahead and nuke it. This is how I disinfect my sponges and it has worked very well for me. Good luck.
