I need to do a deep clean but it is Winter!!!
I have a 46 gallon tank and everything is going goo as far as moulting, temps, humidity. But I Did Notice the Other day at the very bottom on one of the sides there is two patches of black sand. Which to me would indicate Mold either from a dead crab or food that was buried. There is no smell and this does not reach the top. I know I Have Five down moulting at the moment and it is full blown winter here so I Have no way of Deep cleaning this tank adaquatly. Is there any suggestions to this problem or shoould I wait for warmer weather were I Will be able to properly get new substrate in and the old out. This tank is pretty large and holding a large amount of substrate so moving it to hose it out is impossible! And I Don't want t used chemicals on it to clean it . When I Bring the mold or whatever it is to the surface this tank is going to need some thourogh hosing. Any Ideas?

For now, until your molters are up, I would recommend trying to get as much of the black sand out as you can with a spoon. You could also pour salt water down that spot once you've gotten the sand out to inhibit future mold growth. In the future, spray your tank/wet your sand with salt water (full or half strength) because this inhibits mold from growing in there.

I agree with emma. Just clean out the mold as best as you can so it doesn't disturb the molters. You'll save yourself a lot of time and work.

I agree about not disturbing the molters, but if you have a tank that you can put them in as they come up would be best. Depending on what you find through your partial clean, do you have a wet/dry shop vac? This comes in handy with larger tanks that are next to impossible to get outside to hose them out even during the nice hot summer days. A good sloppy vinegar and water wash then suck up with the shop vac. Even helps for the sloppy rinses to get the vinegar smell back out again too.

A more hermie-safe alternative to vinegar is lemons. Take a lemon, cut it in half, and use it as a scrubber on the tank. I do this, and it works well. It's acidic enough to do the same thing as the vinegar, but with a nicer smell and better piece of mind (for me at least) knowing that if a tiny bit doesn't get completely cleaned out, it won't hurt my crabs.
