Mario tends to stay buried, but did come out last night to munch on some corn. Luigi was out first, munching on the shrimp parts, really going at it.
I came home from work today to find him ripping at a bit of moss that had fallen down, not sure if he liked it or not. He headed for the food dish, but ended up plopping backwards into the water dish (thought he was using it for leverage) where he checked out the shell i had put in there to help them get out... and he tried it on, right then and there! It was cool to see him so relaxed he did that with us watching. After a couple minutes he switched right back, it was very much the wrong size, he couldnt even pull into it lol. Wrong kind to, one of the spiral spikey kinds. Guess I'd better learn my shell names.
So it was fun, my son got to see a crab abdomen, and I'm pretty sure Luigi is a male. :)

The shell you're talking about is called a conch shell. There are several types of shells; conch, whale eye, turbo. You might find some information if you search for Shells. Sometimes hermies will stay in one type of shell and sometimes they won't. Lemi came in a conch shell, now he's in a turbo and loves it. It all depends on how comfortable they are in the shell. It's fun because the way they pick shells really shows their personalities! :)

Yeah I have quite a few turbos in the tank now, all a bit on the large size (my smaller ones are in the mail, can't wait till they get here!) and Barnaby has changed back to his original shell from the large turbo he was in.

I'm looking to see what other shells besides turbos have the nice round opening and mother of pearl smooth inside, all the turbos I'm finding are a bit large for Barnaby. I would say he needs an opening less than a half inch wide.

Off to look!

There should be a description of different shells in the Shell forum.
