No reason to buy a pricey reptile ther. for this. I use a water thermometer we use to use in the hospital to test the shower/bath water for the patients.

Thermometer

Something similar can also be bought at other stores, such as Target:

If one does a search for this brand, they may also be able to find it? But there are some meat ther. sold too that are less expensive, but one needs to look at the temp range on the thermometer. They need it to read at least as low as 65* F or just a tad higher.

That's good that I can use those thermometers for the substrate. I think my mom has one of those I can just take and use. It's kind of old though. Would it be just as accurate or should I get a new one at Target?

Just noticed where you're from so seems to me your furnace has been on lately? ;) Where your thermostat is for your furnace, anyway to put the older ther. next to it? (within an inch or two or even tape it on it somehow?) Leave it there for a couple hours and then check it against what the thermostat of your furnace reads. This should give you an idea how accurate it is.
