Getting Worried

Post by krabby_katie »

Okay. So every single one of my hermies is molting. Some have been molting for nearly 2 months! (Xena). You guys know that Xena is a smaller medium, and she's been under for close to 2 months. It shouldn't be taking this long, should it? I'm getting worried, because I haven't seen anyone in weeks.

Hm.. 2 months is a little long. Make sure you smell the tank everday. You won't want a rotting carcass in there. Trust me. Moulting usually takes a couple weeks+ to finish. Try this: Try to feel where Xena is in the sand. don't take her out or anything, just run your finger down the sand(not hard) until you feel a shell, move the sand around it away, put your nose to the shell and take a deep sniff. Tell us what you smell. If your worried of digging her up. Just wait. The 2 options are, (1) Xena is not done moulting yet, or (2) It might of passed. KEEP YOUR NOSE AND EYES ALERT!

Good luck,
Mr.Crab

Hmm... you might want to just check on her without pulling her out if possible.

Won't that stress her out though?

Well, I knew where she went down, but she isn't anywhere near there. I don't know where she went. :S

I am not sure if this is an option for you but what I do is move the tank to my glass kitchen table and look from the bottom at them if I start to get worried. They are always down on the bottom.

Due to family issues my crabs have been adopted out to wizkidsmom (Cheryl), I know she will care for them like I did. Thanks Cheryl

Ok cool. That wont work for me because I don't have a glass table, and its too heavy.

For a small medium, two months does sound a little too long. If you don't mind waiting for another month, let Xena climb out herself. If she still hasn't surfaced by the end of three months, I'd consider checking on her.
