I have Aquarium salt for fresh fish. I found it and grabbed it but now I am thinking it is the wrong stuff. I do have some other stuff that has pictures of hermits on it so I will use that but I just wonder if I am giving them the wrong stuff and this may hurt them. My order should be here tomorrow or Thursday but no later than Friday, it shipped today. Can someone let me know if this is the wrong stuff. I may have to go to the pet store and get the right stuff if this is wrong and I get responses that this salt is bad for them.
Thanks in advance

I have the freshwater aquarium salt. its mainly used for wounds on the fish. i don't think it would work very well on the crabs to soak in or put in thier shells. I would return it if you could for the stuff that has the hermies on it.

Re: I think I have the wrong salt..
I thought so so when I ordered shells from crabbage patch I ordered the salt too. I wasn't so sure when I bought it when I first got my friends 6 days ago until I started reading this forum. I love this place, so many helpful people and great ideas on crabitats. Once the order comes in with the salt I will be changing their water to that salt water. I didn't realize the salt mattered when I first got it, I just thought it had to be any kind of aquarium salt. But now I know for sure and I have the right stuff on the way.

Re: I think I have the wrong salt..
Sea salt assists hermit crabs in maintaining moisture underneath their exoskeletons to crack it open during moults, so it is essential.
I've always been curious of how much sea salt to add to water. Concentration of sea salt in the water is very important. One of the brands (I forgot the name) said 1 teaspoon per litre of water, but I'm not sure if it's concentrated enough.
I'd also like to clarify on some common misunderstandings of sea salt and table salt. I will also need to dig through the hermit crab care section in case I've made any errors myself. Chlorine in sea salt does not appear to be harmful; instead, it is very beneficial. A lot of people blame table salt because it "contains chlorine", but this is not the case. Rather, table salt often contains anti-caking agents. I have also heard that the chlorine-containing compounds in table salt can dry out the gills of hermit crabs, but I haven't found sufficient evidence to back that up.

Re: I think I have the wrong salt..
I got the right salt now. I already used most of it. I have a 1 gallon jug of water that I declorized and put the salt in 1 cup at a time since the directions does it 1 cup at a time. I know it will last me a long time though, I only put it in the salt water dish 1 time per day. Since both are currently burried I am not sure when they will come up again. Who knows what they are doing in there. I wonder if they are molting. I just worry because I had aquarium salt for fresh water fish up until after they were buried themselves. I hope they will molt ok if they are infact doing that.

Re: I think I have the wrong salt..
I take mine out daily to replenish the water with fresh water for the salt and regular water. The dishes are always in the tank but when I wake up I change everything, fresh salt and regular water and fresh food. I give them fresh fruit every day.

Re: I think I have the wrong salt..
To make your water last longer, you might want to consider using a bubbler. It's an airpump, air hose and air stone set inside a deep water dish. It keeps the water moving and you don't need to change it out so often. I do mine about once a week.

That's a really good idea. I should try that sometime.
