? about molting

Post by Chermo »

Ok I just thought of this because my 2 guys are under right now and I can actually see one of them on the bottom of the tank....
My question is....
Do they molt in their shell or out of the shell and go back in their shell once they are finished molting? The one I can see on the bottom is still in his shell just sitting on the bottom and moving his legs around, looks like he is still trying to get further down and he already is under the sand 5" or so. I know where the other one is but I can't see him at all.

Due to family issues my crabs have been adopted out to wizkidsmom (Cheryl), I know she will care for them like I did. Thanks Cheryl

Usually they don't come out of their shell. It's the only thing that keeps them safe.

So they do it in their shell then, that is great then. I was wondering if they just burried themselves for fun or if they are molting, the one I can see is still in her shell at the bottom of the tank.

the part of the body thats inside the shell is soft so only what you see is what comes off or sheds.

Oh, very interesting, I didn't know that, thanks for letting me know. I am guessing they are molting then. I can see the one but she is still in her shell so I was not sure if she was molting or hiding from me because she didn't like me or something. The other one I can not see and I can only wonder. I hope she is not dead and instead is also molting, that would be great if they both did their molts at the same time so they will come back up together too or just 1 after the other.

I can hear them also, I know I can hear the one but I am not really sure about the other one. I am worried about the other one because where he is burried I can not see the sand moving or see him like I can the other one. I can see him and hear him if I look on the bottom with a flash light.

that's alright. i never see mine when they molt. they bury all the way down and i can see the little spot where they left a tunnel behind for air.

I am sure he will be fine also, I just thought he seemed weird before he went down. He was acting weird but after reading these posts I find that they do act weird before they go under the sand. I hope all is ok with them both. I have only had them for 8 days and I hate that they went under so quickly. It has been 4 days I think now since they went under.
