They hide all the time...

Post by Chermo »

I have 2 hermies that I got 4 days ago and the hide all day. 1 of them the first day was in a very small container and the next day is when I got the other one. I saw the first one eat a grape for about 30 minutes, then the next day I got the other one and a 10 gallon tank. All the 2 of them do is hide in their hermi hut all day and dig in there. I lift off the hermi hut and move them to the food side and climbing side and the 1 climbs and the other shoots back to the hut and hides again. The other climbs and eats for about 5 minutes and then goes back in the hut to dig and hide, they are not burring themselves but just digging I am guessing for fun. I really want them to be out and about during the day or even in the early evening when it is kinda dark so I can see them. I am still afraid to play with them because I really don't think the 2nd one has really eatten since I got him and I don't want him to pinch me. The other one I have seen eat but I am still afraid to hold him. I am thinking about sitting on the floor and putting the 1 in my legs while they are closed and see what happens but I have to do that while the dog is outside. So does anyone have any suggestions on how to get them more active for me instead of hiding in the hut all day?
Thanks

Due to family issues my crabs have been adopted out to wizkidsmom (Cheryl), I know she will care for them like I did. Thanks Cheryl

You could give them a bath in dechlorinated water. If it's only been 4 days they might still be destressing from coming home from the petstore. Usually they molt when you bring them home because there isn't enough room in the tank at the store. If you handle them after you give them a bath they usually climb on anything they can.

I did give them a bath and put them in a container with some paper towel in it and they were active in there but as soon as they went back in their tank they went straight for their hut. I guess they love hiding in that darn thing. I just wish I could see them out more.

You can mist them. That works for me sometimes.

I have tried misting them too. I now have Soupy hiding in the sand, he dug a hole and is laying it in now, he is moving so I am not worried about him dieing as of now. He is active when I take him out of his tank. Hermi even after a mist is put back in his tank he goes straight for the hut.

Huh. My new one, Darla, really likes the dark. Some hermies might just be like that.

I turned out the light for the night so hopefully they become active before I go to bed so I can see them. I am still worried that Soupy has not eatten yet, I never seen him eat where the day I brought Kermi home, he ate the grape for about 30 minutes, he loved it.

Lately what I've been doing is hand feeding my crabs honey. They love it. Even the most jumpy crab takes a little taste.

Just normal honey you buy off the shelves at any grocery store or a certain kind of honey? I will try that and maybe use that as a treat when they are good and don't pinch me when I hold them for the first time. I am still scared to hold them but I have only had them 5 days, I have lifted them by their shell but never actually put them in my hand, Kermi was in my lap while I was watching TV but I was still to scared to let him climb on my hand because I didn't want him to pinch me. I read it hurts badly and I am not that great with pain. I scream a lot.

When I first bought Mr. Krabs I held him in the car on the ride home and he never pinched. They do it more out of holding on than attacking you. I would try it. That reminds me of a sign I have on the door of my room.
