Gold vine nano

Post by StarJohn »

I have purchased a nice bit of gold vine nano driftwood. Can anyone tell me if this is safe for hermit crabs? I have two bits of mopani driftwood which they love climbing on and as gold vine is also a type of driftwood I thought it should be ok but just wanted to check. It's available in aquarium shops and reptile stores. Any thoughts would be much appreciated

I'm not sure what that is - what is "gold vine"? What family is it in (plant-wise)?

I also had a piece of gold vine driftwood. Emmac, it is a very smooth driftwood with a gnarled core before it branches out into often very thin sticks. It is of a golden colour, and quite common in Australia. Personally StarJohn, my crabs did not like it very much due to the smooth surface, however I do usually go by the rule that most substance safe for fish are safe for hermits. I don't think that they would ingest too much of it, and if you have given it a good soaking in decolorisation water it should be fine to use.

I'm not sure which family it is Emmac350. All the tag on it said was that it was very low in tannin and suitable for fish and small animals. I will attempt to include a picture. It's the twisty branches at the back left of tank. Thanks for the feedback Ginger. i gave it a good soak in declorinated water then sun dried it. I have put it in and one crab has already had a good climbing session on it so will see how it goes. Thanks for the help! :)

Thanks Ginger!! It's been a steep learning curve becoming an interior hermit crab decorator! Ha ha! Just hope my crabs (Star and John) appreciate it :)

You are welcome! I know what you mean by the interior decorator learning curve - my 10 gallon/40 litre started of with a few plastic pots as hideys, a bit of hessian as a rope, some $2 plastic plants from the store and some boiled rocks that I dug out of the ground. Now, my tank is full of goodies! I'm sure they would appreciate it - it's certainly a few hundred steps up from the petstore!

I know what you mean Ginger! I too started with some garden rocks and some ugly plastic bowls. Even though the crabs were a present for my four-year-old it soon became my new project. I researched like a mad woman and kept buying new and improved pieces for the tank! Keeping these little crabs happy is quite addictive! :)
