Consequences of not baking sand?

Post by vickster339 »

Hello, I have recent fallen into the hermit crab trap... I thought I was pretty well self educated until I read that I needed to bake my play sand from home depot, and run a magnet through it... I have ecoearth on one end of my tank, play sand on the other, and a progressive mix in between. What are the potential consequences of not baking the sand or running a magnet through it before constructing the habitat?

Also, I have set up a webcam to monitor activity... The 20 gallon habitat has only been up 2 days and I also have a 10 gallon for isolation when the time for that comes... Thanks!

Baking helps to sterilise the sand from hidden pests, while the magnet helps to reduce the amount of magnetic metal contaminants. The effects of long term exposure to metal contaminants is unknown, but assumed to be potentially harmful.
