But then again, bearded dragons and snakes etc. kept in tanks by reptile keepers live a long time. All snakes do is hide in the cave or sit in the water dish. No exercise whatsoever.
Think limiting roaming and exercise to once every 2 weeks will improve their lifespan?

I agree with Hermie's rule, exercise is vital to a hermies health. One cannot actually compare them to other reptiles or creatures... in the wild hermies travel for miles during the nights in search of food and shells. To then be put in a crabitat... surely does limit their exercise. I am in agreement with exercise is healthier for them. Exercise also helps to increase their appetites as well. The hermies here, get out of the tank time with exercise in a safe hermie friendly area.

I took them out for a long romp yesterday. They seemed to love it.

Mine like exercise. I put some on my fake Christmas tree and they liked it.

Re: Do hermit crabs really need the extra excersise?
When I took mine out and put them in the temporary home while I did a deep clean, they were more active than I'd seen ever before. They were still timid (only had 'em for a few months) but they warmed up to having me around watching them and climbed way more than they ever have. Up and down the cocohut, up and down the driftwoods...Benny enjoyed hanging upside down underneath them...they did laps of the tub while I cleaned. Highly entertaining! They even tried to climb under the walls of the cocohut...they succeeded in getting partway under before giving up.

i like to hold my crabbies put one hand in front of another for as long as you like they dont stop its like a tread mill lol they seem happier when they exersize, they do build up energy, they must get enough carring around a shell, digging, climbing, but a little extra is never bad! they'll probly curl up in there shell if they get too tired.might even make there shell a buffer for when they molt lol.just think in the wild they can walk around all day and night searching for food and shells.

Re: Do hermit crabs really need the extra excersise?
We need to keep in mind that it is not only a question of physical condition. Exercise is psycologically imperitive.
My girlfriend's sister and brother in law have bearded dragons (this is as much experience as I have with bearded dragons personally) They take them out of the tank frequently and they enjoy running around the house. But then again, bearded dragons and snakes etc. kept in tanks by reptile keepers live a long time.

Re: Do hermit crabs really need the extra excersise?
Looking back, I'd say it is definitely better for them. They do get tons of excersise in the tank, but its not the same. Even putting them in just a tank full of sand and a few branches is fine. They seem to enjoy just running
