I just lost my first ever crab due to my heat pad malfunctioning.. Poor little Bob used to sleep on it... But it got a little too hot... Devastated!! He was also known as Mr Grumpy... Every time I went near him, he would latch on... Was interesting cleaning the tank last week!!!

Sorry to hear about Bob
One reason we recommend thermostats if one uses a UTH. I also lost one due to heat damage as well
My sympathies.

Re: Just lost Bob... Poor little guy..
The heat mat completely burnt out overnight... Its just luck that I caught it before it cooked all of them...
Any ideas on how to keep tank warm until my lights arrive??

Use a heat pack. Don't you have a thermostat to control the heat source?

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Sometimes accidents do happen through that is beyond our control. Do/did you have the tank up off of the mat? I use thermostats on all our tanks and iso's here too, but even with them being electronic I still manually check the substrate temp. (had a couple thermostats in 10 years burn out too....)

Sympathies,Go to home page and under sister sites click CrabbyWiki
Go to Categories on the left >>> heating and lights>>Keeping tanks warm during a power outage
some idea's there you might be able to use until your lamp arrives with items you may already have

Re: Just lost Bob... Poor little guy..
It was a heat mat that sticks to the base of the tank... The weather has been pretty warm during the day, it's mainly been the nights, so have upped the temp of the heater in there & left it running for them.. it's now the humidity that's the issue... Have moistened the bedding so hopefully that will sort it out for now...

Does your tank have a cover to help hold in the humidity? If not, you will want to get it covered.
And yes, when using a heat mat, you want to elevate your tank up at least 1/2" or more so the tank isn't resting it's weight on the mat, and gives a little room for airflow.

All covered... Working a treat!!
The heat mat/tank was raised.. There was a huge burned hole in it..
The lamp is working well.. And the humidity seems right.. Helps to live in central Queensland where it's almost always humid anyway!!
