Re: cannibalism?
Don't use sardines - they can be packaged with oil (can't find what kind of oil and whether it's crab-safe), water (not dechlorinated), or "sauce" (not specified what ingredients).
You don't need to buy special meats for your crabs. Feed them an unseasoned bit of whatever you're eating for your meal to your crabs. If you want to give them something, go to the pet store and look at the fish foods - you should be able to find a jar of freeze-dried baby shrimp that haven't been treated with chemicals. You can also get bloodworms or any other non-chemical treated insect/seafood. Those jars will last months, too, so it is usually a pretty good buy.

Re: cannibalism?
Emma,
I do feed my crabs sardines only very occasionally, and I have found them canned with spring water and with olive oil, which is safe for crabs. Otherwise all that other stuff is right out!
I know Marie feeds her crabs sardines, but I haven't asked what kind she purchases.

Re: cannibalism?
I've been giving my hermit crabs raw snapper that my mum bought fresh from a market. I chop up small pieces of the fish and then soak them in a small container of salt water that I mixed before giving it to the hermit crabs. I hope the meat wasn't treated with any chemicals, but my hermit crabs appear to be fine after eating it.

Re: cannibalism?
The sardines we feed our hermies here are in spring water. I am able to find them at WalMart for less. Almost 7 years feeding them, no problems so far.

Re: cannibalism?
One of mine has just turned cannibal... Has eaten 2 in 2 nights... Neither was molting... Both were very active & chirpy... They get lots of meat & seafood... They eat better than I do!!
They always have cuttle bone available.. Heaps of extra shells...
Any ideas on what could be happening???
