Staying Still and Making Clicking Noise

Post by mk32 »

Hello everyone,

For the past two days, one of my hermit crab is just staying still inside his shell not moving and I hear him making clicking noise. Not sure exactly how he's making that noise, perhaps he's snapping his claws or hitting his shell?

Anyone has ever experienced this issue? Is my crab sick/angry?

For about two weeks now.

He seems okay now and moving about... I was just scared when that happened and I made the post.

Drinking too much sea salt water

Post by mk32 »

One of my crabs seems to be spending a little too much time on the edge of the sea salt water mix dish. He is tipped sideways and I can see that water is dripping out of his shell. I guess he's drinking the water and dishing out the excess water back to the dish.

Is this normal behaviour?

I wouldn't worry too much. He may be cleaning his shell out.

What are you doing at the time he is making the sound? Sounds like he is irritated about something? 2 weeks, he should be semi use to his surroundings and noises, or are you changing things about?

At that time, I was picking him out to do some 'exercising'. This was before I got the new tank so he was still in the little plastic kit that came with my purchase of the crabs. So, there was still a lot of 'change' and moving around etc. But yes, I figured he was irritated and placed him back to the tank right away. However, he was still making the clicking sounds when I placed him inside for a few minutes.

I just recently finished my tank/terrarium in the weekend. They should now be adjusting to their new home now. The crab that was clicking (named him Pepper) went MIA after a night. There is a little hump on the ground and we assume that he's down there since then. Perhaps molting? We made sure that we do not disturb or modify the surrounding area of the tank.

Okay great. He has stopped doing that also and is now moving around the tank.

Thanks everyone.

Any time a hermie is moved into a new tank, have new decorations added or substrate it is similar to a new environment to them. It is important to make a crabitat as stable as possible and let them adjust to it for at least a month when we get them home. And as mentioned each time a deep clean or new are added they go through another adjustment period.
