Inactive Hermies

Post by z06vette387 »

Hi all,

I have had my hermies for about a month and a half now. When I forst got them they were fairly active....at night...which is normal since they are nocturnal. Now they might come up two or three times a week, Why is this? Am I doing something wrong? I don't think they could be molting...there are no signs....they are all brightly colored and look really good...except for my smallest...he's not that colorful.

My temp and humidity is between 75 and 80. I have fresh and salt water...fresh food and water everyday.

Is there anything else I can do????

How big is your tank? ANd how many crabs do you have in your tank? IF the space they are living in is too small they tend to be less active in my opinion. I started my 2 crabs off in a 2.5 gallon tank and now I have them in a 5.5 gallon tank. They are a lot more active now. It could be a lot of other reasons as to why they arn't more active, but I do believe the space size does contribute to their wanting to move around more. Hope this helps!

I have 5 crabs in a 10 gallon tank, with my biggest being between the size of a golf ball and baseball(not considered a jumbo) 1 medium, and the rest are small.

Ok, I just thought of something. Would a Loud ear piercing noise such as a college dormatory fire alarm(that will hurt the human ear) stress hermies out, and therefore put them under ground to de stress.

We had a fire drill last Tue(2/13), and our fire alarm in our rooms is a constant, ear piercing....screech i guess you could say. They have not been active since then....

However, my large hermie is vibrantly colored and has been down for about 2 weeks now.

Just a thought...what do you guys think?

no it doesn't seem crowded at all. maybe its just destressing time. i tend to see all my crabs go down to destress at once.

i don't know, that's a good question. i know that they can feel the vibrations with their antenna, but i'm not sure about a high pitched sound.

Your tank looks great, just one sujection, The sand don't look that deep, If you have a large crab, the sand is suppose to be 1 to 2 inches deeper than him. Some of my crabs love to bury themselves during the day and at night come out. I think it just a natural hiding thing for them, even if they have somewhere else to hide.

There is about another inch of sand that is not visible...the black trim on the bottom hides it.

I ma going to get 20 gall. in a couple of weeks when I am home for Spring Break...I'll get 25-50lb bag of playsand then.
