What a waste... :(
Dyed Metallic Phasianella variegata

My hermit crabs' favourite:
Phasianella australis

Is it legal to take empty shells from the beach? I know it sounds like a silly question, but I heard it was illegal to take sand from the beach, so I'm not sure if the laws apply to shells too.

It's interesting how our Aussies wouldn't normally encounter pheasant shells in the wild (since they thrive in the north while the snails are down in the south), yet mine love their shells so much.

I'm having trouble finding an Australian online store that shell Phasianella australis shells. So far all I've found are Americans on eBay selling them and I feel silly buying from them, since they imported the shells from Australia in the first place. This store sells them, but they are still smaller than the one Eris is currently wearing.

Hi Wai,

There is a guy who sells on ebay who has sold them in the past, he might again. This is not the australis but close! Might be worth contacting him. He sells heaps of other shells too.

I found out what Gigantors shell was thanks to your link. Nerita balteata, native to Broome. http://www.spectrumshells.com.au/Shells ... ct_id=2430

Yeah, I saw that listing on eBay too. There are different species of Phasianella snails, but mine seem to like the australis variant the most. The one that Eris is wearing (see our Home page photo) is 65 mm long.

Hi,

just found Phasianella australis here too in different sizes but more expensive, part of Australian Seashells company in Perth, just don't mention you want them for Hermies, they are a bit snobby!!!

re: crab chews - they are odd, like little sticks but my crabs do like them!!. Well when I get a bundle ready to post next I will add some in. Would love to swap you, tell me how the rice field snail shells go that I sent you.

My smaller crabs like those shells too, don't know what they are called. The other shells which are a hit are whitish with a really distinctive banded edge. I have two of them and they are always occupied. I will try to get a pic. It has been great getting the lsit of shell names, now I can order with confidence :)

Yay! Let me know when you are ready. I'm mostly after Phasianella australis with a max length greater than 65 mm, but I'm happy to trade for the smaller ones too.

I once e-mailed them for buying instructions and pricing and they ignored me...

The first time I emailed them I just got sent a link to the crazy crab website ^) when I emailed them yesterday I didn't mention hermies and I got sent the pricelist link and they told me there is a minimal of $30 to be spent in an order. The larger sizes of Phasianella australis were $10 each, Merv's site had 65mm ones for $6.
