Today I purchased 2 new hermies and one is almost jet black. The kid at the store said it was an Australian exotic....I have 12 crabs, pps,e's and a couple coenobita cavipes oh, and a very hard working straw. I've only been keeping crabs as pets for 3 years and I've never seen a black one. Does anyone know what this is? Thank you

Hmm... could you send us a photo? If its eyes are round I'm guessing it's an Indo. I'd doubt it's an Australian exotic, because you can only get them in Australia. Don't worry too much, the darker the colours, the healthier it is .
Could you please send me some photos of Cavs? I need them for the species page I'm making. You will get credit for each photo.

Of course! The Forums is not the only part of the site . Check out our Species page, or the Photo Gallery.

Both compressus and rugosus can be black in hue. Are the antennae on your crab orange? If so, it's a rug. If they're black or bluish, then it's a compressus, most likely.

most likely a Ruggie. They can be very dark like that.

It could also, if it is VERY hairy, possibly be a spinosus. I got one at my local Petco. I thought it was just a VERY dark version of another species at first, but after emailing back and forth with tony_coenobita and some other people, the consensus was spinosus. Eye shape, claw, hairy,.black abdomen, all that good stuff. try
