Re: About those blueberries I talked about earlier.....
Ok I am not 100 Percent sure But I think I Know who this is. I Live in MD and years ago I was looking to get some straws and no one in my area carried them. I Was chatting on myspace with another crabber and she said she knew a guy in DE who gave her some straws and that they were huge. She said he said he would give some to me for 30 dollars a piece. She said this guy was a large collecter and had a lot of odd pets and had tons of Hermit crabs. Now Again at this time he was not a pet store just some dude who had a ton of pets. I Thought It was weird and was not going to chance meting some guy I didn't know to get these crabs becuase it just seemed fishy that she got them free and then he wanted to charge me and then he changed the price a couple of times. He would not give his name or Phone number so that I could talk to him, nor would he talk to me online. So I Passed. But This website makes me think of him. And it looks shady. I Would Love to have some Blue Berries BUt I Think I Will wait untill I can get them In A Store That I know is not Shady. Better Yet It Would be nice If Hermits of this type are never Sold. I Love My Crabs And thouroughly enjoy them. But There Are times when I Look at them And think of how they were snatched aways from their lives and now have to live in captivity and depend on me. I feel like when I buy a Crab I Am Saving it from Someone who may not know how to properly care for it, But again I wish they would not sell them anymore. I have a great set up and quite a large one but it will never be like being free and living in Nature!

Re: About those blueberries I talked about earlier.....
I'm not happy with the fact that the store is importing C. variabilis. Australia is extremely far away from the USA and I don't know how many would survive the trip.
C. variabilis is literally the only species Australians can keep as pets (C. perlatus are almost non-existent). We're lucky to be the only ones to have access to them, but now the USA too? I guess having some Americans help me research the C. variabilis species would be handy, but it's not fair that the USA's availability of species is superior to that of Australia, should C. variabilis be sold by that store too.
That store's care information reminds me of how much I knew when I first started Hermit Crab Paradise in 2004...

Foxydiva,
I too feel the way you do about having these little guys in captivity. It breaks my heart to imagine them running free on a beach, or in the forest near the beach, living their crabby lives with the ability to travel for miles, and now they are trapped in a glass box for the rest of their many years (if we care for them properly). I too would think of buying one as saving it from someone who could not care for it properly, but even moreso, when I buy one, I am supporting the store in wanting to get more, so I perpetuate the process.
After my last purchase of two lively and interesting and delightful Equadorians, I vowed to never again purchase a hermit crab. The way they frantically ran around the tank looking as if they just wanted a way out, I could only picture what they were snatched from and would never see again. I felt awful.
I will put up ads to offer to adopt unwanted crabs, but I won't purchase any.
As a result I've adopted 5 more from homes where they would not have lived long at all!

Are your referring to me? What site? Is the seller based in Australia? If the seller is outside of Australia, they probably won't be able to ship any hermit crabs to me.willow111 wrote:I know this is old but, I know a website that will soon ship blueberries to you!

Re: About those blueberries I talked about earlier.....
There is a thread on CSJ that was 'stirred up' this past week or so. Exotics
Wai our hands are a little tied over here across the ocean in the U.S., but has Aus. changed their custom laws for the exporting of Aussie hermies?

Re: About those blueberries I talked about earlier.....
So willow111 was talking about the Exotic Land Hermit Crabs store? I've seen their website before and it appears that the seller is based in the USA; hence no chance of any animals getting exported to Australia.
Exporting most things from Australia to another country generally isn't a problem, but exporting most things to Australia is the major problem (we like giving away things, but not accepting any). Dogs and cats have a chance of getting through quarantine, but hermit crabs certainly have no chance. A tourist earlier this year collected shells from another country and brought them to Australia, only to find that two of the shells were occupied by marine hermit crabs. The quarantine officers proceeded to euthanise (apparently) the two animals.
I am not even going to try importing land hermit crabs from another country, in case they get killed. If items are not permitted into Australia, they get destroyed and aren't returned to the country of origin.
Since most people here treat hermit crabs as disposables, I'm not surprised at all that C. variabilis are being shipped out of Australia.

Re: About those blueberries I talked about earlier.....
Marie - (response to your post on CSJ) - perhaps the reason they were still pending up until very recently is due to the fact that the crabs were molting and hadn't finished recovering? They were originally supposed to be ready for sale back in September or October and have only recently become ready for purchase. Maybe I'm just trying to think the best of the owner of the store without finding any proof that he isn't providing what he says he is, but that's my two cents.

Re: About those blueberries I talked about earlier.....
Dunno Emma? The gentleman began advertising in June wanting to purchase these hermies. It began to hit a couple message boards in July, but the date at the bottom of the home page kept getting pushed further back. (due to non/postponed arrivals then) When something hit’s the boards like this and with as many hermie addicts as there are there are some who will check at least weekly to see if there were any updates. Just seems a tad odd that now it is mentioned for 12-31? Just something about a species that for years one was told could never be...

Re: About those blueberries I talked about earlier.....
I'm terribly skeptical about his website because it just doesn't feel completely legitimate when I visit the site. A truly professional site is going to have GOOD information, and their care info is extremely lacking.
I would only feel comfortable ordering exotics (if I were ever to do so) from a website that seems very confident and knowledgeable, and very open and inviting. This one feels uncomfortable to me. I do follow my "gut" in things like this.
