False registrations

Post by Wai »

This is a message to all those people who have decided to register an account at this community in hope of doing nothing but promote websites (whether it is theirs or not) and posting advertisements. I do not mind if the website is not about hermit crabs, but if I find that it is anything malicious or harmful to any curious members of our community to visit it, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE BANNED AND DELETED WITHOUT WARNING. Such websites include adult material, gambling and online pharmacies. Visiting such websites may activate any malicious programming scripts and inject viruses into your computer. I warn those people, YOU WILL BE CAUGHT. Regardless you have posted or not, if I do catch you then you will be banned and deleted immediately. I apologise to those who have been contributing in a positive manner to this community for making such a negative announcement, but I am getting tired of searching through the memberlist and finding more of these 'false registrations'. If you see that the total member count has decreased by a little, then you'll know what's happened. ;)

I've been playing around with the registration script file. It turns out that robots put in the value "agree" to the registration forms to automatically register an account and of course, their website URL. However, when you change that value to be accepted from "agree" to something else like "yEsIagRee" or even something like "dsj254FsW4632", they will be blocked off. ;) I did it for a while they probably got a live person to see what my value was, and a couple of bots got through. Neverless, I had to change the value again, and haven't had any spams in a while. I hope phpBB3 has better spam fighting features! :D

I realize the age of this posting, but was reading through some of the announcements.
If spam/porn continues to be a problem with registrations, is it possible to have a Captcha image that rotates with each registration? On occasion you may still have a live person come though, but it does cut back on a LOT of bot registrations.

I've installed an anti-bot question. Captcha's tend not to block off bots effectively. However, I made a text field asking newcomers to fill in. If that field is left blank, then the registration process is halted. After installing that feature, we've never had a spam bot since.

I REALLY HATE CAPTCHAS.

Most of them I cannot read properly, with the letters being blurred, different case, or too close to one another. I simply hate Captchas.

I like anti bot questions, most basically the "Are you a bot? (yes, no)

XD
