Hermit crabs burying spare shells

Post by JGrizzle »

I keep seeing some of the spare shells I put in my tank being buried by some of my hermit crabs. I was wondering if this was a sign that they may not like the shell? Or is it because they are trying to hide it for later. This keeps happening from time to time and I don’t know if I should leave the shell or just resurface it. It gets pretty annoying having to wash off the dirty shells after they have covered it in dirt.

Not sure why they do it, but it just happens. I keep the shells in an elevated basket to prevent that from happening.
