Escape in progress (video)

Post by appps »

Happened to notice this would be escapee this morning

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB2floXkwO4

Didn't video for long as I was worried shed fall on the coral below but shows how easily they can climb up things.

Needless to say I've raised the cord to just out of reach but I also have one that runs to a pond filter that I can't put out of reach.
Any ideas to make it unclimbable

My tank is covered by four pieces of glass. Two of the pieces have a corner cut away to serve as airholes. However, I position them in such a way that it is impossible for the hermit crabs to get out unless they abandoned their shells.

Just move the hard/dangerous things away from the cord and let it be. It doesn't hurt to let them climb; however, make sure they can't climb out of the tank.

I cant move the hard dangerous things as the cord is running into my salt water pond and so over pebbles and the actual filter.

I've read that even a fall from a short distance can be fatal for them.?

Most hermit crabs will withdraw into their shells if they fall so their legs and claws don't snap on impact. However, if the surface below is hard, the shell may crack.

To prevent our hermies from climbing the cord of our thermostats, I have packaging tape on the cord along the inside of the glass. The packaging tape is very slippy and hard for them to get a grip on, and clear too so it doesn't look that bad. But the wrinkles do need to be out of it, or anything they can get a hold of.

Well found her right up the top of the filter cord today. Didn't want to let go either. In the end I had to sort of slide her down the cord to the bottom to get her off.

Will give the packing tape a try in the morning!

It works here GREAT! I had to think of something. The hermies here were climbing the thermostat cord and I wasn't too afraid of them getting out because I have screen lids under all the plexiglas lids. But when I saw where they pinched through the plastic coating and insulation of the cord causing the copper wiring to become exposed... I HAD to do something.
But even using the packaging tape on our cords, they still seem to manage to climb the silicone on the inside corners of the walls. -.-
