looking for freshwater sand

Post by Purple pinchers »

I am trying to find some sand to use in my fresh water fish tank but because most sand comes in bulk. So I was hopeing to use some for my hermit crabs too. So do you know of any sand for fresh water fish that is also safe for the hermit crabs? (hopeing to upgrade my 10gal to a 20gal for the hermits)

I wouldn't use it, it looks very much like gravel. I have a small strip of gravel in my tank that faces the window, because green mould kept growing there when sand was used. I have never seen my hermit crabs trying to bury themselves in the gravel, so I don't think it's a good idea to use gravel as a substrate alone.

Have you seen the sand for sale in a pet store? Go have a look if so and observe how big the grains are. If they're similar to ordinary beach sand, I guess you can buy it online to try.

Okay, it sounds like it's a very fine sand, because the grains are even smaller than the dry CaribSea Aragamax Sugar Sized Sand (0.1-1 mm). Give it a try then.

Ok then how should i clean it because it says "These unique substrates jumpstart the cycling process with live water-purifying bacteria contained in each water-packed bag." and "Detoxifies metals, eliminates ammonia, neutralizes chlorine and chloramine and provides a protective slime coat for stressed fish. " Should i like boil it first or something before i use it in the crabs tank?
