12 February 2025: Due to family commitments and work, I have been unable to update this website and realise it is long overdue for an update. I will start updating the different pages as an overhaul after a long decade hiatus, especially considering how its focus and niche on the Internet will change.

Death

Why did my hermit crab die?

Please read through the previous pages of this guide if you have not done so already to identify any causes of death that were avoidable such as malnutrition, poor choice of bedding and low temperature or humidity. Rather than buying more hermit crabs, you should fix up your tank and buy any necessary supplies that you are missing to help prevent more deaths. Your hermit crab may also have died from PPS or illness.

How long should I wait before burying my hermit crab?

Many crabbers in the past have mistaken live hermit crabs for dead ones. You should wait at least five days after thinking your hermit crab has died before burying them in a grave outside.

What are the reliable factors that indicate death?

Decay is the only reliable indicator of death. Fishy odours are no longer considered reliable indicators due to some rare cases where pre-moulters smelt horrible before a moult.

Are hermit crabs cannibalistic?

Unfortunately, yes. Although feeding your hermit crabs plenty of meat may slightly reduce the likelihood of cannibalism, its risk cannot be eliminated altogether unless you keep each hermit crab in a separate tank. Although it is extremely rare for hermit crabs to attempt eating fellow hardened roommates, they will readily attack fresh moulters that they find who lack a hardened exoskeleton. Hermit crabs must be offerred plenty of room to bury themselves to moult.
